Why did I buy a domain?
When I started college, I decided that I wanted my own site because I wanted a unique blog name. I had websites at free hosts, but I had been growing steadily out of that scene. I wanted to be a more serious webmaster. At the time, owning a domain seemed to be a step in that direction. So, I bought this domain and I have kept it ever since.
I purchased a small and cheap plan with a small company owned by someone with a reseller. It wasn’t long after I bought my domain and package that the company sold out to Hostradius. I can barely remember the quality of service there, to be honest with you, because it wasn’t long until Hostradius sold all of their clients to InsiderHosting.
I have to say that I was very satisfied with InsiderHosting. Initially, their customer service was excellent… beyond excellent. Uptime was better than I had ever experienced before. Unfortunately, I soon grew out of the plan that had been given me and I needed to move on. Being a college student, I didn’t have enough money to pay the InsiderHosting prices for a larger plan. It seemed the right decision since right about the time I was looking into moving, their customer service went down the drain.
So, I moved to a reseller at Netrillium. I bought a reseller from them for a cheap price. Again, my experience with Netrillium was one of those cases of ‘begins excellent but slowly turns to crap as time goes on.’ Not only did my websites outgrow Netrillium, but Netrillium was also over calculating my bandwidth. They claimed I was using over 50GIGs when I know I was barely using 20GIGs. Additionally, I was plagued with almost constant PHP errors on my sites that Netrillium would claim were fixed time and time again but never were. My need for more bandwidth and my disappointment in their service led me to move on to my current host, Dreamhost.
As of 2008, I have paid for my second year at Dreamhost. Despite some issues I have with server slowness and downtime, I am fairly pleased with what they offer for my money. I have some pretty popular, high traffic sites and the hundreds of GIGs of space and bandwidth keep me from ever running out. And, I get all of this for under $120 a year!
Why did I choose the name?
I’m a very BIG Anne Rice/The Vampire Chronicles fan. Like, a major fan. From the book The Vampire Armand, there is a quote:
“I turned him [Daniel] from a morbid romantic into a fierce killer.”
Morbid Romantic had been my online handle for a long time since I was a part of many Anne Rice communities and wrote fanfiction. It was the name that everyone knew me by. When I finally decided that it was time to get a domain, it seemed the most natural choice because that was the name that everyone related to me.
