Have you ever been put off an author’s books after reading a biography of them? Or the reverse – a biography has made you love an author more?
I’ll admit first that I don’t read a lot of biographies about authors– historical figures and important people, sure, but not authors. I have read a few about the Marquis de Sade, though, which was for pure entertainment value. Some of the stuff in his biography a person couldn’t have made up on their best day. What personal information I know about my favorite authors usually comes from news sources and personal statements/news.
Let me use my favorite author as an example. Anne Rice. She has had a great deal of drama attached to her and her personal life. Great writer though she is, she is not the most careful of people with her mouth or with her rather odd opinion of things. She shoots out what is in her mind as if it is sacrosanct. It’s obvious she thinks highly of herself and her opinions, but this comes at the expense of others intelligence. It’s really a bit haughty the way she comes off. It has put a lot of fans off from her; she has lost a lot of her dedicated following because of her personality and antics. If you don’t agree with Anne Rice, you are wrong and a Plebian who should not be allowed to have an opinion because your mind is not vast enough to understand what she is trying to impart… something like that.
Sometimes I am downright embarrassed because of her shenanigans, but not enough to give up on her and my love for what she is now ashamed of.
But, it would never make me stop reading her books. Knowing what I do about who she is and her personality, I still adore her writing. Anyone who could create a character like Marius, who is the pinnacle of everything I admire, will have my loyalty for life. I criticize Mrs. Rice, but I love her books and will continue to defend them to the death. I don’t care how many insults are thrown to her, but I do care how people speak of her books. I think the Vampire Chronicles are truly some of the most beautiful books ever written. It makes me sad that she said, “thank God it’s over.” It broke my heart.

I adore Anne Rice and frankly don’t care what she says or does in her personal life. I agree that she’s said some rather offbeat things that made me wonder about what goes on in her head. I’m more interested in her books than in her life I suppose, although I’ll admit that these new “Jesus” novels are not my thing. I’m keeping hope alive that she’ll return to her vampires and witches soon but I won’t hold my breath. *lol*
@Irene- I really do wish she hadn’t gone into her latest series. Her writing a series of Christian books is just so… so… it makes me sigh and shake my head. I’m sure they are great books, though, since she is a superb writer. I just have no interest in them and will continue to love the Vampire Chronicles more than I have loved any other series of books ever.
